It's a bit intimidating to know that there's so much going on under your feet, and that it's possible for things to erupt at any given point. It's normal to see large areas of this white rock-like covering on the ground and to smell the sulphur smell coming up from the vents. What you can't see in this photo is that there's a geothermal vent under all the logs blocking part of the Yellowstone River. At first glance it looked like the logs were on fire, but it was just steam from the vent.
